Birgitta

  • Inside this cuff is the rare Vadstena lace from Vadstena, Sweden. The Vadstena lace is handmade, using an ultra thin linen yarn in a technique called ‘knyppling,’ similar to bobbin lace. The lace is from the late 1800s. This is the thinnest and finest lace we have ever worked with.

Vadstena in Sweden is a center for the lace technique ‘finknyppling,’ making bobbin lace with the finest thread.

The cuff is named Birgitta, after Saint Birgitta, the founder of Vadstena Abbey in 1346.  Swedish historians agree that ‘knyppling’ most likely did not start at Vadstena Abbey, but was initiated by women who had returned to Vadstena after having accompanied their soldier husbands to fight in wars in Europe. It is believed that the lace technique originally came from Flanders, Belgium.

There is a limited edition of 10 cuffs. They are numbered inside 1/10, 2/10 etc. The Birgitta cuff is signed by the designer. Sustainable. Made in New York City.
